Your Rights and Protections Against Surprise Medical Bills
Effective January 1, 2022, the No Surprises Act helps protect patients from unexpected medical bills when receiving care, including services at Bay Area Disc Centers. We believe in transparency, fairness, and helping you understand your financial rights before treatment begins.
When you see a healthcare provider outside your insurance network, you might be billed for more than your plan covers — this is known as balance billing.
The No Surprises Act protects you from balance billing in certain situations, helping prevent costly surprises.
You are protected if you:
- Receive emergency services, even if provided by an out-of-network provider.
- Receive non-emergency services from an out-of-network provider at an in-network facility without consenting to out-of-network charges.
Good Faith Estimates for Uninsured or Self-Pay Patients
If you are uninsured or choose not to use insurance for your care, you are entitled to a Good Faith Estimate.
This document outlines expected charges for your treatment, so you can plan ahead with confidence.
You can request a Good Faith Estimate before scheduling care.
You will receive it in writing at least one business day before your appointment whenever possible.
The Estimate is not a bill or a binding contract — actual costs may vary depending on the services provided.
If you are billed more than $400 above your Good Faith Estimate, you have the right to dispute the charges.
